Choosing a laser welder for jewellery work

A laser welder changes what a workshop can accept over the counter. Work that used to mean unsetting stones or turning the customer away — a broken claw on a set ring, a snapped chain beside a pearl, porosity in a casting, a sizing on an enamelled piece — becomes a five-minute job at the bench. The return is measured in jobs you no longer refuse, not in time saved on jobs you already do.

The core specification is average power, and more is not automatically better. Power sets how deep and how wide a single pulse can penetrate, which in turn sets the thickest section you can weld in one pass. A machine in the 150–200 W class covers the great majority of jewellery repair: claws, chains, sizing, filling porosity, tacking findings. Higher power buys you thicker sections and faster fill on heavy work, and costs more to buy and to cool. What matters more than the headline number is how finely you can turn the power down — delicate work near a stone needs a stable, repeatable small pulse, and a machine that is coarse at the bottom of its range is frustrating regardless of its maximum.

Spot size, pulse width and frequency do the actual work. A tight spot with a short pulse gives a small, shallow, precise weld for fine detail; a wider spot with a longer pulse pushes heat deeper for structural joins. Being able to set these independently, and save them as presets per job type, is the difference between a tool a jeweller uses confidently and one that gets used at a single setting for everything.

Reflective metals deserve a direct question. Fine silver and high-purity gold reflect a large share of the incoming beam, which makes them harder to start a weld on than platinum or karat alloys. Ask the supplier specifically how the machine performs on silver, and if you can, watch it weld the metals you actually work in before you commit.

Ergonomics decide whether the machine earns its money. Look at the microscope view and its cross-hair alignment, the working distance under the head, whether there is room to bring a ring shank in at an angle, and how argon reaches the weld point. A cramped working area or a dim view quietly reduces how much work goes through the machine.

Then the running costs and the safety case. Fibre sources are long-lived and largely maintenance-free next to the older lamp-pumped YAG machines, which needed periodic flashlamp replacement — the main reason fibre became standard. You will still need argon, wavelength-rated eyewear and a shielded working aperture. Confirm the interlocks work and that correctly rated eyewear ships with the machine, not generic safety glasses.

Finally, cooling and power, as with any workshop machine. Confirm the voltage, frequency and phase it needs, whether the chiller is built in or separate, and what ambient temperature the unit is rated to run at through a summer afternoon.

Can a laser welder work near set stones?

Yes — this is the main reason workshops buy one. The heat-affected zone is small and localised, so claws and settings can be repaired without unsetting the stone. Heat-sensitive stones still need care and a low, controlled power setting, so the ability to dial the machine down matters as much as its maximum output.

What power laser welder do I need for jewellery?

A 150–200 W class machine handles the bulk of jewellery work: claw repair, chain joining, ring sizing, porosity filling and tacking findings. Higher power is worth it mainly for consistently heavy sections.

Is a fibre laser better than the older YAG welders?

For most workshops, yes. Fibre sources have a long service life and no flashlamp to replace, which removes the main recurring maintenance cost of lamp-pumped YAG machines.

Does laser welding work on silver?

It does, but fine silver and high-purity gold are highly reflective and are harder to weld than platinum or karat alloys. If silver is a large part of your work, ask to see the machine welding silver specifically before you buy.

What consumables does a laser welder need?

Argon shielding gas is the main running cost. Protective eyewear rated for the laser wavelength must be worn and replaced if damaged. Beyond that, a fibre machine has no routine consumable equivalent to a flashlamp.
