About the Diamond Tester

The Diamond Tester — also called the Vortex diamond tester, or a diamond tester pen — is a pocket instrument for the moment a customer puts a stone on the counter and asks what it is. It measures how quickly heat moves away from the tip: diamond conducts heat far faster than glass, cubic zirconia or white sapphire, and the meter reads the difference in about a second.

It is a sorting tool, not an assay. It will tell you confidently that a stone is not cubic zirconia, and it will not tell you a stone's clarity, colour or origin. Moissanite conducts heat close enough to diamond that a thermal probe alone cannot separate the two — a combined thermal and electrical tester is the usual answer where moissanite is common.

The probe suits a retail counter, a buy-back desk or a repair bench where stones arrive set and cannot be removed for a laboratory test.

Diamond Tester — questions

Will it tell moissanite from diamond?

No. Moissanite conducts heat closely enough to diamond that a thermal probe alone cannot separate them. If you see moissanite regularly, use a combined thermal and electrical tester, which adds a conductivity check that does distinguish the two.

Can I test a stone without unsetting it?

Yes — that is the point of the retractable tip. Hold the stone steady, touch the tip flat to the table facet, and take two or three readings at different points. Readings taken at an angle or on a dirty surface are the usual cause of an inconsistent result.

Does it grade the stone?

No. It answers one question: is this diamond or a common simulant. It says nothing about clarity, colour, cut or whether a stone is natural or laboratory grown, all of which need laboratory equipment.
