At a glance

  • Silicon drift detector resolves alloy elements cleanly, not just karat bands
  • Non-destructive — nothing is scraped, dissolved or removed from the item
  • Aiming camera places the spot on a clasp or shank instead of averaging over stones
  • Reports karat and full percentage composition, with export for records
  • Interlocked shielded chamber — the tube cannot fire with the lid open

About the FalconX-6k

The FalconX-6k is the analyser for a counter where the number on the screen decides what you pay. A silicon drift detector separates the gold, silver, copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium peaks cleanly, so you get a full composition rather than a karat guess, and you get it in seconds while the customer is standing there.

The chamber takes rings, bangles, chains and small bars, and the aiming camera lets you place the measurement spot on a specific area — a clasp, a shank, a filed window on scrap — rather than averaging across a stone setting. Results display as karat and as percentage composition, and export for your records.

As with every XRF instrument, the measurement reads the surface. Thick plating on base metal can present as high-karat gold; the FalconX-6k is supplied with guidance on pairing it with a density check so your buying process is not relying on a single technique.

FalconX-6k — questions

How accurate is the FalconX-6k on high-purity bullion?

Accuracy on fine gold is a different specification from karat accuracy on jewellery, and the two should be quoted separately. Repeatability on fine gold is within ±0.05% and across the karat range within ±0.1%, measured against reference standards on a 60-second count. Ask us for the full calibration report before you order.

Will it detect a gold-plated item?

XRF measures the surface layer, so heavy plating over base metal can read as solid gold on any XRF analyser. Standard practice is to pair the reading with a density check, or to test a filed window on scrap. This is a property of the technique, not a shortcoming of this unit.

Is it safe to operate at a retail counter?

Yes. The chamber is shielded and interlocked, so the X-ray tube cannot fire unless the lid is closed. The unit is supplied with its safety documentation, which should be kept with the machine.

Does it need calibration, and who does it?

XRF analysers are calibrated against reference standards and should be checked periodically. We arrange calibration and service through our own network rather than sending you back to the original factory. Tell us where the machine will be installed and we will confirm what that looks like for your location.

Can it test stone-set jewellery?

Yes. Use the aiming camera to place the measurement spot on bare metal — a shank or a clasp — rather than across a setting, so the stone does not affect the reading.
