At a glance

  • Vacuum before the pour, positive pressure after — porosity removed in one cycle
  • Set-and-hold temperature control to 1400 °C protects karat alloys from burn-off
  • Takes a standard perforated flask up to 100 mm diameter

About the Jewellery Making

The Jewellery Making — also written jewelry making machine, or the Vortex casting machine — melts a charge under vacuum and then pushes it into the flask under positive pressure, in a single sealed cycle. Pulling the air out before the pour is what removes the porosity that shows up as pinholes on a finished surface, and it is the difference between a casting that polishes clean and one that has to be recast.

The chamber takes a standard perforated flask. Temperature is set and held rather than judged by eye, so an alloy is poured at the same point every time — which matters most on karat golds, where overheating burns off zinc and quietly shifts the composition of metal you are about to sell by weight.

It suits a workshop casting its own rings, settings and findings in batches, rather than a retail bench melting buy-back into bar.

Jewellery Making — questions

Do I still need a separate melting furnace?

For casting, no — the Jewellery Making melts and pours in one cycle. If you also consolidate scrap into bar, a dedicated melting furnace is faster for that job and leaves the casting machine free.

What causes porosity if the machine pulls a vacuum?

Usually the investment rather than the machine: a flask that has not been burnt out fully, or one poured too cold. Confirm the burnout schedule and the flask temperature at the pour before suspecting the vacuum circuit.

Can it cast silver as well as gold?

Yes, at a lower charge weight — silver is less dense, so the same crucible volume holds about half the mass. Silver also oxidises more readily, which makes the vacuum stage more useful rather than less.
